“The first time I saw a megabuilding in person was when I was 12 years old. Although I grew up hearing stories about them from mum and dad and even saw some old photos, nothing could have prepared me for what it would actually feel like when I stood underneath one.
It was a colossal piece of concrete and steel. But despite its towering presence in the sky, I remember thinking it just looked so run down and sad. I don’t remember which corporation was responsible for it. Though dad seemed excited - he told me it was the first of its kind to be built in New Exford.
Each building of that generation was designed to house 15,000 people at full capacity. These days, it’s a lot more than that. Old markets, old gyms, old maintenance tunnels - all were turned into extra accommodation by the city to make as much profit as possible.
And if you had enough money you could rent one of the fancier rooms at the top, and if you were really rich, then you could even get one with a window. The rest lived inside that sunless base. I don’t think I’d really enjoy it much if I lived there, even if I had a big room. I wonder about the people who’ve had no choice.”
